CONSPIRACY theorists have begun spreading their own versions of the current outbreak of flu with misinformation and disinformation abound.
Some are claiming that COVID-19 is back. Tests done so far have not shown the presence of COVID-19, but a mere influenza virus. It is undeniable that flu can come as an outbreak but in most cases it is endemic. It is estimated that close to one billion people suffer from flu yearly in the world with mortality ranging from 200 000 to 600 000. The United States records deaths which can exceed 50 000 per year, a sign that flu can be very dangerous if proper management is not done.
Lately, we continue to hear of people succumbing to the flu and the government has now confirmed that, indeed, it is this ailment, caused by influenza viruses mainly Influenza A and B that is causing misery to the masses. Many people were reminded about the deadly COVID-19 which wreaked havoc during its time before subsiding in 2022 with the emergence of the less virulent Omicron subtype virus. Indeed, flu can kill but death can be avoided by taking the necessary action to avert complications. Masking up is important, covered coughing, early treatment and surveillance are key if we are to reduce morbidity and mortality.
It should be known that flu can present with symptoms for even 10 days and during that time, transmission of the virus is dormant. People should appreciate that the same strategies we employed against COVID-19 can work against flu. It is thus imperative to take appropriate action which reduces transmission of the virus from one person to another. There are risk groups that are vulnerable to attack by the notorious influenza viruses and these include children under five years of age, those above the age of 65, patients with underlying conditions such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension, previous strokes, heart failure, renal failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, among others.
Why then do people die from such a flu? Many questions are asked but closer investigation show that those who succumb to the viruses will have developed complications that could have gone for some time. It should be noted that failure to address problems such as pneumonia, respiratory distress, sinusitis, ear infections can result in serious consequences which include death. Some people always wonder how to tell that it is now time to visit clinicians for medical attention and I have always advised that if one develops some of the following symptoms, then medical care should be urgently sought:
- Shortness of breath
- Severe chest pains
- Increasing weakness
- Persistently high fever
- Convulsions.
People affected by this type of flu should keep themselves well-hydrated with increased intake of fluids. Warmth is a requirement especially now that we have low temperatures in the country. Case management should be robust with correction of complications like septic shock, pneumonia, sinusitis and that is why we should keep our eyes open for early detection. Flu has a vaccine which can be administered on a yearly basis and it can be given from 4 to 6 weeks before the anticipated season.
