The prestigious event was initially pencilled in for July 16, but was postponed to make way for a Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) rally at Sakubva Stadium.

The police had directed organisers of Chibuku Road to Fame to change their venue as it was just adjacent to Sakubva Stadium, but a decision was later made to temporarily shelve the event. The province’s National Arts Council of Zimbabwe programmes officer Alexander Tunzi, said all was now set for the event.

“The Provincial Chibuku Road to Fame finals are on this weekend. We postponed it last month, but this has also given us a chance to polish up our preparations,” he said.

Tunzi said although the prizes for the winners were already available, the sponsors were yet to confirm the total sponsorship package.

He said they have made a critical analysis of the groups set to participate at this year’s event, adding that only a few outfits had failed to meet their criteria because some of their members had already recorded albums.

“One of the qualifications is that members of the groups should not have recorded an album. Some of the groups failed to meet the criteria,” Tunzi said.

Sungura outfit Lion King, Mbada Dzemafaro (sungura) from Marange, Nice to Nice (pasada) from Mutare, Orchestra Simba neNyasha, Tunes of Harmony from Mutare were among the groups scheduled to participate in the competition.
