Two illegal artisanal miners were shot dead on Wednesday while several others were injured by security guards at the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) mine concession in Chiadzwa.
Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident.
“Yes, I am aware, but we are still gathering facts on what transpired,” he said.
However, sources said over 300 illegal artisanal panners had found a new panning site known as Bravo near Muchena in Marange, near a ZCDC mining concession.
“Some ZCDC guards went to investigate what was happening at the site and when they saw over 300 artisanal miners, they indiscriminately fired shots without warning, killing two on the spot and injuring dozens. The situation is tense,” the source said.
