NATIONAL chairman of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association Jabulani Sibanda has challenged National Healing Integration and Reconciliation co-minister Moses Mzila-Ndlovu, to name and shame fake former freedom fighters masquerading as genuine war veterans.

Addressing guests last month during a public lecture on the late Zipra combatant Ethan Dube, Mzila-Ndlovu – who is also Bulilima West MP and deputy secretary-general of the MDC formation led by Welshman Ncube – said there were many people masquerading as ex-combatants.

Mzila-Ndlovu – who is an ex-Zipra combatant – said genuine war veterans were living in abject poverty while impostors were abusing resources meant for their benefit.

However, Sibanda last Friday challenged Ndlovu to expose the so-called fake war veterans that he had referred to.

“He (Mzila-Ndlovu) is the one who knows those people. He must reveal them. You must ask him to do so. They must not benefit where they are not supposed to,” Sibanda said. A week ago, another war veterans’ leader Joseph Chinotimba said Mzila-Ndlovu must stop commenting about issues affecting war veterans as he was not their representative.

“Mzila-Ndlovu cannot talk about war veterans,” he said.

“He does not know anything about them. This is like someone who sees a man living with his family and starts talking about issues of that family yet he doesn’t live in that home. He must shut up.”

Chinotimba — whose own liberation war credentials have been questioned — accused the MDC of seeking mileage by pretending to sympathise with war veterans.
