HARARE, Mar.26 (NewsDayLive)- The two robbery suspects, Luke Zinyengere and Tafadzwa Marondera who last week staged a dramatic escape in the court's precinct before they were rearrested, appeared in court on Wednesday facing two counts of armed robbery and escaping from lawful custody.
They pleaded guilty to both charges when they appeared before magistrate Fadzai Mtombeni.
Zinyengere later told the court that the firearm he is alleged to have used to frighten the wardens to escape was a toy gun.
It is alleged that sometime in early March 2025, Zinyengere and Marondera applied for bail at the High Court and it was dismissed.
Zinyengere allegedly connived with Marondera and approached a prison officer Donald Madzinga, who agreed to help them to smuggle a revolver into the prison cells.
Zinyengere’s younger brother allegedly brought the revolver concealed in a bowl of rice and handed it over to Madzinga, who in turn smuggled into the duo's holding cell.
