HARARE, Jan 29 (NewsDay Live) -The University of South Africa (Unisa) has denied claims that it awarded an honorary doctorate to controversial Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD) leader Walter Magaya in recognition of his philanthropic work.

This follows Magaya's claim that he was a holder of a Unisa certificate. The PHD leader made the claim while presenting his credentials to contest in the just-ended Zifa elections. He was, however, disqualified on grounds that he had failed to produce an O-Level certificate, the minimum basic requirement.

In response to social media inquiries, Unisa on Wednesday said its database had no record of Magaya.

"Based on the information provided by the said media platform, the system of the university could not find any record showing that Mr. Magaya was ever registered or graduated with Unisa," the university wrote in a statement.

"The university has never conferred any honorary doctorate on Mr. Magaya and strongly condemns this false claim.

"Relevant authorities within the university have therefore been requested to take the necessary legal action in this regard," said Unisa.
