MUTEMA-MUSIKAVANHU legislator, Angeline Gata, has expressed deep concern over escalating incidents of bullying in schools in her constituency.

This follows ongoing research being conducted in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Pan African Researchers, aimed at understanding and addressing this pressing issue.

Preliminary findings from the research indicate a significant rise in bullying cases among learners, prompting Gata to call for immediate action.

As schools open tomorrow for the new academic year, she is intensifying her efforts to raise awareness among parents, educators and community members about the importance of vigilance against bullying.

“The safety of our children is paramount,” Gata said during a community engagement session.

“We must work together — parents, teachers and community leaders — to cultivate an environment where respect and kindness prevail.”

In her long-term vision, Gata is advocating for the formulation of specific laws targeting bullying.

She believes that existing regulations need reinforcement to ensure effective implementation.

“The introduction of new legislation is crucial in deterring bullying behavior and fostering a culture of respect among learners,” Gata said.

As part of her immediate strategy, Gata said she would continue to visit schools to engage with parents and raise awareness about bullying preventive measures.

The legislator said she drew inspiration from President Emmerson Mnangagwa's initiatives, particularly the  introduction of SI 2 of 2024, which focused on the protection of children and young persons.

This was later legislated as an Act of Parliament, which underscores government’s commitment to child welfare and safety.

“We must cultivate an environment where Ubuntu/Hunhu are the norm for our learners,” she said, reflecting on the values of a progressive Zimbabwe.

“As the new school year approaches, stakeholders are encouraged to remain vigilant and proactive in combating bullying, fostering a safe and nurturing educational environment for all students.”
