A SHIFT manager at a fast-food outlet has appeared in court for allegedly stealing US$3 420 from his workplace and squandering it on an online betting platform known as Aviator, popularly known as Kandege in street lingo.

William Gonese (28) from Chitungwiza pleaded guilty to theft charges when he appeared before Harare magistrate Lynne Chinzou.

During his plea, Gonese told the court that he committed the crime while trying to win more money to impress his new wife.

The matter was deferred to Friday for sentencing.

The complainant in the case is Simbisa Baker’s Inn, represented by audit manager Yusufu Bruce.

According to prosecutor Audrah Chitoro, on December 28 last year, at around 11am, Gonese, who, was employed as a shift manager at one of the Baker’s Inn outlets in Harare, was entrusted with a float of US$3 420 to serve customers.

However, the following day at approximately 3am, Gonese called the audit manager, confessing that he had lost US$470 in cash and US$2 950 in InnBucks deposits after using the money for online betting.

Bruce immediately went to the shop and conducted a reconciliation, which confirmed that the entire amount of US$3 420 had been misappropriated.

Nothing was recovered.

A police report was filed, leading to Gonese’s arrest.
