A TOTAL of 42 babies were delivered on Christmas Day at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, an increase from last year's 25 at the same institution.

Authorities at the country's major referral centre told NewsDay that all deliveries were safe and there were no stillbirths.

In Chitungwiza, the dormitory town's hospital welcomed  25 children split as 9 boys and 16 girls including a set of twins.

Parirenyatwa Hospital public relations officer Terrence Mautsi said the health institution had not recorded stillbirths for some time.

“The  [absence of] stillbirths is a result of effective antenatal care management where the mothers were coming and being checked by specialists to deal with emerging issues prior to delivery,” he said.

Over 130 babies were born on the same day last year in major hospitals with a lot more born in clinics, private maternity hospitals and other centres.
