Former ZBC chief executive officer, Munyaradzi Hwengwere, says the formation of the Association of Mining Journalists in Zimbabwe (AMJZ) is a fulfillment of his dream.

He has been appointed inaugural patron of the Association.

“This is historical, and I will tell you why. In the early 2000s, we were in Langkawi, Malaysia. And at the time, I was chairing a group of journalists from developing countries," he said in an interview.

“And there were a lot of Heads of States from the international dialogue. Africa, Asia, Americas, and all that. And the question at the time was, why?

“What can we do to ensure that media in the developing world carry the story of their countries? And then we spoke about forming an association of like-minded media practitioners. So it has taken years before this association has started,” he said.

He added: “So for me personally, I am very excited. More relevant, you know that Zimbabwe is the only country in the world that was colonised based on its presumed mineral wealth. Because of the Great Dike and other minerals. Zimbabwe is the only country in the world. That was colonised based on its presumed mineral wealth.

“Zimbabwe's mineral wealth, mineral wealth, is by far the most important resource this country has that can unlock every other field of agriculture, of tourism, of manufacturing, mining.”

Hwengwere, a seasoned media and public relations executive and a notable entrepreneur, is expected to bring a wealth of experience and leadership to the association.

Hwengwere is the founder of Ray of Hope, the company that owns and operates the Midlands regional radio station Ya FM.

His extensive career includes serving as the Chief Executive Officer of ZBC and as the General Manager of Buy Zimbabwe, a campaign aimed at promoting local products and services.

Most recently, he was appointed as a Board Member of the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ).
