MULTI-AWARD-WINNING South African actress, television presenter and producer Nambitha Ben-Mazwi believes every artist needs a clear “why” purpose that guides them even during challenging times.

Known for her standout roles in Black Is King (personally selected by Beyoncé), Showmax’s Empini, and the award-winning Savage Beauty, Ben-Mazwi is sharing her journey and strategies for career success in the arts in a new Showmax Masterclass production created in collaboration with Actor Spaces.

From understanding the business of arts to equipping oneself on set, Ben-Mazwi has been described as a true ambassador of African excellence who is committed to empowering a new generation.

She said professionally, her strategic goal had been to create a globally recognised brand, choosing projects aligned with this vision to establish her presence internationally.

“My vision is to be the epitome of God’s unlimited glory. This personal “why” keeps me going, knowing that if I can inspire a young girl, then I have fulfilled my mission,” she said.

The actress has encouraged artists to set quarterly financial and career goals, stressing the importance of diversified income streams to ensure stability.

“Voice work and commercials are excellent for steady cash flow,” she advises. This, she notes, allows for greater flexibility, such as taking a sabbatical when needed, while still building one’s professional portfolio.

Ben-Mazwi credits a well-rounded “actor’s toolbox” as vital for professional growth.

She has continually honed her craft, adding skills like Muay Thai and dialect coaching, which allow her to take on diverse roles.

“Being versatile is not just about acting, it is about adapting to roles and expectations in different markets,” she said.

Her martial arts skills were instrumental in her recent role on Empini, where she shone as an action star.

In her Showmax Masterclass, Ben-Mazwi emphasises that a successful career is not achieved alone.

“You need a holistic team, from an agent and business manager to legal counsel to support and protect your interests,” she said.

The actress also values building relationships with make-up artists, designers and other professionals who understand her brand and share her commitment to showcasing dark skin beauty.
