SELF-TAUGHT scriptwriter and film director Sean Jena (25) (pictured) is set to release his first film at the end of December.
Titled I Hope, the movie speaks to crime, gangsterism, betrayal, corruption, early childhood parenting and drug and substance abuse.
The Glen View-bred youth said he drew inspiration from lived experiences.
“I wanted to tell a story that reflects the harsh realities of life in the ghetto,” Jena told NewsDay Life & Style.
“I believe that there is a lot of talent in these communities that is yet to be recognised.”
The film features a cast of up-and-coming young actors from Glen View including Samantha Chere acting as Jacqueline “JQ” Mugabe, Prince Manatse (King Pee), Decibel Kamupira (Tino), Carlton Rwarasika (Detective Felix) and Michelle Mareva (Inspector Danai).
The cast also includes Purity Manyowa (Mom), Tringel Taruvinga (Joy), Tatenda Gono (Jayden), Tanatswa Chifamba (King Pee Guy Zibla) and Troy Tamusan’a (Beats).
The story follows JQ, a young female singer who becomes embroiled in the world of drug dealing and corruption.
I Hope is a powerful and thought-provoking film that tackles tough issues with sensitivity and nuance.
It is a production of Ignite Youth, a local organisation that aims to empower young people to pursue their passions and purposes.
Its success will be a testament to the talent and creativity of young Zimbabweans.
Jena, who wrote and directed the film, is determined to raise awareness about social issues affecting young people through film.
“I believe that art has the power to transform lives and communities,” he said.
“I hope that my film will inspire young people to make positive choices and pursue their dreams.”
The film’s trailer is set to be released at the beginning of next month, with the full movie scheduled for the end of that month.
Jena is seeking partnerships and sponsorship for the film.
