IN a world where artists struggle to eke out a living, Nhlanhla Sibanda, a poet from Bulawayo, has found a way to make his passion pay.

Through his performances and powerful words, the poet has transformed his talent of reciting poems into a sustainable source of income.

Speaking to NewsDay Life & Style, Sibanda, popularly known by his stage name Nhlanhladepoet, said he uses his passion for poetry to generate income.

“I am currently unemployed, so reciting poems has been my source of income. I use it sustain my livelihood,” he said.

Sibanda’s love for poetry began in 2018, courtesy of Thandolwenkosi Sibanda, a young lady from his church.

Although he initially didn’t take it seriously, the seed had been planted.

“The poetry gift lived inside my heart and soul,” Sibanda reflected.

After a brief hiatus, Sibanda reunited with childhood friend Thembani Moyo in 2022.

Moyo’s enthusiasm and innovative ideas rekindled his passion.

“He played a huge role in my journey, believing in me and encouraging me to showcase my talent,” Sibanda said.

He joined Intsha Yamanje, a budding crew, and performed at various events, winning prizes and gaining popularity.

Social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok further amplified his reach.

Recently, Sibanda stole the show at an Amphitheater event hosted by Skyline Trininty College, securing prestigious rewards.

“I did very well, and we got the bigger rewards furniture for the school, trophy, and recognition,” he beamed.

Despite facing funding and institutional challenges, Nhlanhla draws inspiration from local artists and poets like Thalusodepoet, Sage and Assurance Moyo.

“I’ve learnt a lot from them,” he said.

“They’ve given me the spirit to push forward and never back down.”
