OPPOSITION Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) president Nelson Chamisa has described the frequent visits by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to several apostolic groupings across the country as a sign of desperation ahead of this month’s general elections.
Chamisa made the remarks on Sunday while addressing thousands of party supporters at Sakubva Sports Oval in Mutare, where he said Mnangagwa was using the wrong platform to campaign for re-election.
Chamisa, who was on a whirlwind tour of the Manicaland province, mocked Mnangagwa’s recent visit to the Johanne Marange apostolic sect church’s annual Passover, saying: “Mnangagwa was in Marange recently. I saw him wearing a white garment. I laughed. He is using the wrong platform. He should remove the white garment and come to politics.
“That white garment is meant for one to go to heaven, not the way he (Mnangagwa) is using it.”
A recent report published by Unicef estimated that 2,5 million people constitute Zimbabwe’s apostolic movement, with the Johanne Marange congregation being among the largest of the apostolic sects.
Mnangagwa, who has visited several churches across the country to spread his re-election gospel and woo voters, has officiated at several church gatherings, including those of Emmanuel Makandiwa-led United Family International Church, the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe and the Zion Christian Church.
