Harare Provincial Affairs minister Miriam Chikukwa yesterday toured Mt Hampden’s new upmarket Sandton suburb near the site of the proposed new Parliament which will form part of the new proposed capital.

Chikukwa commended developer Felix Munyaradzi for complementing the government in the realisation of its dream for a new modern city.
Government is proposing to shift the capital to Mt Hampden as Harare metropolis, which has way exceeded its carrying capacity, struggles to cope with the ever-increasing population due to continued rural-to-urban migration.
Chikukwa, who was in the company of Zanu PF Harare provincial commissar and Harare South MP Shadreck Mashayamombe, called on other businesses to complement the developer by coming to build state-of-the-art hotels and other facilities to be used by legislators after the completion of the $140 million new Parliament building to be constructed by the Chinese.
“I am happy with the developments here. It is a good project. I am happy with the way the road infrastructure is being put up to suit the standards of the new city,” she said.
“We call upon other businesses to complement the efforts by the developer and set up hotels so that MPs will not have to travel to the current capital Harare.”
Mashayamombe said Munyaradzi’s project, about 20km from the central business district, was a welcome development that would see the expansion of Harare and ease pressure on infrastructure in the capital.

“As Harare province, we welcome these developments that will grow our city. I came here to show our support for this project that will see government realise its dream for a new city,” Mashayamombe said.
The new city, according to former Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo, will be modelled along South Africa’s affluent Sandton town in Johannesburg.
Munyaradzi said he was developing 744 hectares of land close to the new Parliament building.
Already, the developer has built roads, water and electricity infrastructure with the servicing expected to be completed by 2018.
“We have paved all the roads and we will surface them next year. We hope to complete the project by 2018,” Munyaradzi said.
