Speaking at the UBH School of Nursing graduation ceremony on Thursday, the institution’s chief executive officer Nonhlanhla Ndlovu said construction of a purposefully-built school of nursing was now long overdue.

“Classroom shortages and the shortage of office space are affecting operations. The shortage of offices has forced staff to share, making it difficult to counsel students,” Ndlovu said.

“Despite the good passes recorded, there continues to be a chronic shortage of tutors due to the freezing of posts (by the government). We are awaiting Treasury agreement for the engagement of tutors.”

A total of 68 nurses graduated.

Pharmaceutical and Chemical Distributors chief executive officer Suri Vithal challenged the graduating nurses to keep up with the trends in nursing by pursuing further education.

“Nurses make the backbone of the health system in Zimbabwe,” he said.

“They have a great responsibility to improve the health system in the country. It is true that you had to overcome a lot of challenges in your training, such as lack of expansion of training facilities. Your success has come about as a result of your hard work, dedication and resilience.”
