The 14-member board of trustees is responsible for overseeing the grant-making, budget and investment strategies for the 102- year-old global institution.

Kaberuka was the seventh AfDB president, completing his 10-year tenure at the end of August after beginning his first term in 2005.

AfDB is Africa’s premier development finance institution, with 54 member countries and authorised capital of around $100 billion.

“The Rockefeller Foundation is committed to forging strategic partnerships, as we make progress in addressing today’s most pressing challenges,” board chair, David Rockefeller Jr said.

“Dr Kaberuka is an authority in development issues, deeply knowledgeable on global finance, with experience in government and the private sector, all of which make him a great addition to our board. I am excited to welcome him.”

Rockefeller Foundation president, Judith Rodin said Kaberuka is “a compelling voice on key development issues, and we are confident he will contribute immensely to our work as we promote more inclusive economies and build greater resilience against shocks and stresses in today’s world”.

“He was a partner to the foundation when we held the pivotal 2013 Africa Forum on Inclusive Economies together with AfDB and UNECA, and I am thrilled to continue working with him in this new capacity,” she said.

A Rwandan, Kaberuka was the country’s Minister of Finance and Economic Planning between 1997 and 2005.

He holds a PhD in Economics from Glasgow University and sits on several other boards including the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. Kaberuka is currently a Hauser Leader-in-Residence at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
