He replaces Mark Mathe who has been relegated to the post of assistant coach.
His appointment comes after a string of poor results by the Mathe led technical bench that was also aided by former Caps United goalkeeper Brenna Msiska and Tostao Kwashi.
According to reports from the press conference, Chitembwe has been given a top four target that he has to achieve in the remaining nine matches.
