JUSTICE, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs deputy minister Fortune Chasi has bemoaned the delays in the realignment of over 200 statutes with the new constitution saying this was affecting the justice delivery system. NUNURAYI JENA OWN CORRESPONDENT
Speaking at an advocacy meeting organised by his ministry in Chinhoyi last Friday, Chasi said: “At present we have more than 200 statutes that need to be aligned and this is affecting the delivery of justice in the country.”
Chasi said in order to speed up the implementation of aligning the laws, government was planning to hold inter-ministerial meetings monthly where each ministry would berequired to go through the constitution and develop a work plan factoring pieces of legislation that require amendments.
Chasi said in addition a committee of deputy ministers will be created to supervise the work in various ministries before the final document goes to Cabinet.
He, however, did not give a time frame for the programme.
Other issues that came out of the meeting included the need to translate the constitution into vernacular languages and produce simplified versions of the national charter.
