Renowned banker David Hatendi has died. He was 59.
Hatendi reportedly died in his sleep yesterday morning.
His brother Stanley Hatendi confirmed the passing-on of the veteran banker.
“It could have been heart failure,” said Hatendi.
“He was a gentleman with a soft heart for mankind. He cared for others more than he did for himself. It’s a great loss to us as a family.”
He said after a long banking career, Hatendi had moved into independent investment banking and consultancy.
The late Hatendi was the country’s first black person to benefit from the Rhodes Scholarship and was chairman of the Rhodes Trustees in Zimbabwe and Northern Tobacco.
He is former chief executive officer of NMB Holdings. Hatendi assumed the reins at NMB in 2004 when its former directors — Julius Makoni, James Mushore, Otto Chekeche and Francis Zimuto — fled the country at the height of the banking crisis.

Before joining NMB, Hatendi was with the Merchant Bank of Central Africa (MBCA). He is survived by his wife and three children, two sons and a daughter.
Mourners are gathered at Charmwood Estate, off Enterprise Road in Harare. Hatendi will be buried on Thursday.
