MBIRA songstress Chiwoniso Maraire will enhance her international appeal when she collaborates with South African jazz guru Hugh Masekela on an upcoming song.

Maraire recently travelled to South Africa for the recording of the song that is expected to feature on her next album.
Her manager Tsungi Zvobgo yesterday confirmed that the talented mbira player and vocalist sealed a collaboration deal with Masekela. “Chiwoniso did her part on the song recently when she went to South Africa,” said Zvobgo.
“I cannot give you enough details about the deal because the producers are still doing the studio work. Hugh will be putting his touch on the song soon and we are still waiting for feedback from South Africa. I will update you when I get latest developments on the production process.”
Maraire is one of the few Zimbabwean musicians that managed to penetrate the international market with traditional beats.
Her album, Rebel Woman, got global recognition when it was named among the best releases on the World Music Charts in 2009.
Her combination with Masekela should yield good results, considering the duo’s vast international experience.

Masekela is widely recognised as one of the best music finds of Southern Africa. He has worked with a number of Zimbabwean musicians at various shows here and abroad.
The renowned trumpeter, composer and singer, has amassed popularity through his skill and expertise with instruments and lyrics. Masekela released a number of international hits that include Grazing in the Grass and Bring Him Back Home.
He has played primarily in jazz ensembles, with guest appearances on recordings by The Byrds and Paul Simon.
He also collaborated with West and Central African musicians and did interpretations of songs composed by Jorge Ben, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Caiphus Semenya, Jonas Gwangwa, Dorothy Masuka and Fela Kuti.
