Macheso in eight-hour marathon show

FOR the first time in many years, Alick Macheso will tonight embark on an eight-hour marathon performance without a supporting act. Entertainment Reporter The musician performs at Pamuzinda Highway X-scape in a “welcome back” show after his tour of South Africa last weekend.

His manager, William Tsandukwa, said the musician feels he has starved his fans of such a wholesome performance for many years.

“We last did such a performance a long time ago. Macheso feels he owes it to his fans to remind them of the old days when he would play for many hours,” said Tsandukwa.

“We have a number of international shows lined up this month and next month so our local shows are limited. We don’t want our fans to miss us when we are on international tours. We want to ensure that we satisfy our fans with a long performance.

“Most people should remember how we used to perform throughout the night right until sunrise with a few breaks. People miss that and on Friday (tonight) we will take them down memory lane.”

He said Macheso had a number of guitarists that could take turns to play during the show. “If all is well with him (Macheso), he can perform for many hours without taking a break. He has strength and we are hoping he will be in good form and have a marathon performance.

“It is a show that Macheso has dedicated to his fans for their unwavering support. It has been a long time since we were able to play most of our hits. Friday (today) is the day to dish out most of those outstanding songs on one stage over one night.”

Tsandukwa said the show would also prove that Macheso was still a force to reckon with despite mixed feelings over his latest album Kwatakabva Mitunhu (Kure Kwekure).

“People have been saying different things about the album, but we feel it is a good product. The response we have been getting for the new songs at shows is good. In South Africa people went wild when we performed.

“We want people to come in their numbers and witness a unique show. We will not repeat such a style in the near future so this will be a lifetime opportunity for our fans to have an all-night dose of Orchestra Mberikwazvo music.”

The show is expected to start around 9pm tonight and end after 5am tomorrow.

Macheso will tour the United Kingdom at the end of the month. In April, he will perform in Botswana before going back to South Africa.
